Ghostsigns from Krakow in Poland

Hand painted signage around a doorway

Areta Kovalska’s ‘Shadows of a Forgotten World’ blog continues to offer up excellent material from Eastern Europe. This time she has travelled to Poland and documented some of the beautiful ghostsigns of Krakow, after the previously featured examples from Lviv in Ukraine.

I love the one shown above for its innovative use of the large brick shapes to frame the different components of the signs. In particular, the impact of this limitation on the name at the top is an uneven sizing and spacing of the eight letters used. I also wonder why symmetry wasn’t aimed for by making use of the unused brick at the bottom of the left hand set, to match the use of the two smaller bricks on the right side?
