April and the fascinating world of fresco

Francesco-del-cossas-apri-002

A headline that started “Where there’s a wall” led me to this page (fittingly for today’s date the image is called ‘April’) and subsequently to the wikipedia entry for fresco.

This is clearly an area that I will have to do more research into, especially given the global nature of the art form and the connections to the ancient ghostsigns at Pompeii and my ‘rennaisance grafitto’ discovery [Link expired].  I am most intrigued by the idea of ‘Buon fresco’ where the paint is applied before the plaster dries giving much greater longevity, but requiring much more skill from the painter.

Any leads to useful articles and other resources on this classical art form gratfully received.
