Hemingway's Ales (RIP)

Photo: Ackers- Schoolboy Hero!!!!

This wonderful gable end sign for Hemingway's Ales (Big Ben's brand) ceased to exist as of 9th March 2011.  It was a truly remarkable ghostsign and featured as the backdrop for my interview with John Seargent in the piece broadcast on the One Show.  Incidentally I notice that it isn't currently featured in the archive so it would be great if anyone with a pre-demolition photo could add it via the History of Advertising Trust.

This photo shows the location before and after the clearance operation.

And this one from behind shows the remains of the terrace as the bulldozer makes its way towards the sign.

  1. I live straight opposite where this house just to be. So much nicer not having to look at old run down & empty houses.

    1. Do you know what they have planned for the site?

  2. Too bad they could not have been saved and restored. But who knows which was more cost effective, doing that or just tearing them down. Nice photos.

  3. it was my great great grandfather John William Hemingway that established Hemingways Brewery on York Road. I'm researching the family tree as we speak and trying to archive things together.. lovely to find this, just ashame I missed seeing it
