Hovis Process

Also on my visit to HAT I found this nice example of how big companies got the consistency of style across the country.
It is some directions issued by Hovis as to how the back of a bread van should be painted. In a 1952 Association of National Advertisers (USA) book there is a reference to "Painter's Guides" that were issued with outlines of the lettering and any illustrations required on Brickads. Numbers were placed between the lines that related to a colour guide. This referred to a standard colour system (just like painting with numbers and the pantone system). This made the sign writer's (or Wall Dog's in USA) job easier and led to greater unformity of signage nationally.
